The permanent magnet brushless dc motor drive systems have found wide applications due to their high power density and ease of control. The brushless dc motors require rotor position sensor. But position sensors may add a considerable cost to the system thereby limiting their use for low performance applications such as automotive and home applications etc. This paper describes a brushless dc motor without a position sensor. The position sensorless drive proposed in this paper is based on detection of voltage difference between the phase terminal voltage and the motor neutral voltage.
