The capacity of aeronautical ad-hoc networks

Currently aeronautical communications are extremely limited by the Aeronautical Telecommunications Network (ATN) standard, which does not support the communication between aircrafts directly. In this paper, we propose an Aeronautical Ad-hoc network (AANET) based on a single flight path, whereby the aircrafts in the cruise stage can communicate with each other through multi-hop relays without the aid of ground stations. Due to its special structure, existing results on conventional mobile ad hoc networks are not applicable for determining the capacity scaling law of this network model. We prove an upper bound on the per-node capacity and construct a simple transmission scheduling scheme to achieve the lower bound. Our results show that the capacity of the AANET is (Θ (1/D√ ρ log(mρ D))), where ρ is the density of aircrafts, D is the length of airway, and m is the number of height levels of the airway.
