Scalable Multicast for Content Delivery in Information Centric Networks

Information-centric networking (ICN) is proposed to address the shortcomings of the current IP-based Internet architecture to present a content-centric design making data access independent from location, while offering support for name-based stateful forwarding, in-network caching, and content-based security. In this paper, using the ICN principles, we propose a novel multicast architecture to efficiently deliver content to multiple end hosts. Proposed architecture integrates stateless forwarding into stateful ICN to partition the multicast tree and establish cost-efficient branches that limits signaling overhead required to insert or remove hosts from the resulting tree. We present an in-depth study on the proposed approach to examine its architectural components and operation, and illustrate its impact on the overall network performance through various performance studies addressing its overhead, scalability, and forwarding efficiency.
