Because of the high dropout rate among Native American Indian children, as well as the likelihood that Native students will be labeled as handicapped or learning disabled, it is clear that American education has not well served native peoples. This author explores the compatibility of many Native beliefs and the principles of whole language learning in hopes that the logic of implementing whole language with Native children may be worthy of serious consideration by more educators.
