Design process planning and management for CAD frameworks

This research addresses the realization of a new abstraction level for CAD Frameworks, the problem level, aimed at supporting design process planning and management services in CAD Frameworks. This objective has been achieved through the development of a formal theory of design for describing design processes; the development of a paradigm for design process planning and management that properly accommodates all real world agents and resources cooperating in the design activity; the development of a domain independent, and heuristically and epistemologically adequate general representation of the design space based on the proposed design formal theory, and in the proposed design process planning and management paradigm; and finally in the modelling of design processes as a problem solving activity developed in a design space defined by the previous design space representation. A design process planning and management system, called Minerva, that realizes the problem level in CAD Frameworks was implemented.
