Abstract A design approach for a microprocessor-based complex controller for application to a synchronous generator is described in this paper. It is shown that the proposed complex regulator can be used to enhance the capabilities of the regulators and improve the generator performance as it allows the application of adaptive controls. An algorithm for an adaptive stabilizer is described. Test results on a microprocessor-based excitation regulator using this adaptive algorithm show that the performance of the generator is improved.
