Allocation of UPQC in Overloaded Mesh Distribution System with Battery Charging Load

This paper presents the allocation of the Unified Power Quality Conditioner (UPQC) effectively in mesh distribution system under different loading conditions and considering static battery charge load. The advantage of UPQC over other D-FACTS devices is that it has both shunt and series compensators so that voltage profile can be improved and power loss can be reduced more effectively. The UPQC which injects series and shunt reactive power i.e. UPQC-Q is used in this paper. The size of UPQC is found by modelling it in steady state. The UPQC is placed at all the buses one at a time and various parameters are found and analysed. The candidate bus is selected at the bus having minimum active power loss. It is seen that with the placement of UPQC at candidate bus the active and reactive power losses are reduced and voltage profile is improved.
