Forging of polygonal discs with barrelling

Abstract During compression of a regular polygonal disc between a pair of flat dies, both bulging of sides in the plane section of the disc and barrelling along its thickness take place. In this paper an upperbound solution is constructed for determining the die pressures developed during compression of polygonal discs taking into account the barrelling only. A constant frictional stress is assumed on the entire interface between the dies and the disc. The solution is compared with earlier work [1] in which the bulging of sides has been taken into account. The range of applicability of the two solutions is discussed.
