Experiments on Sound Reducing Floors Including Visco-Elastic-Damping on Board a Rhine Cruise Vessel

The effect of five types of deck covering on the noise in cabins on board a Rhine cruise vessel has been investigated. Especially the influence of a visco-elastic layer applied on the deck in way of the cabins, forming part of two of the deck coverings, was the principal subject of investigation. Apart from the effect on board the ship under investigation a more general engineering estimate about the noise reducing effect of the visco-elastic layer whether or not in combination with other noise abatement measures, e.g. a floating floor, is given. Three different measuring methods have been applied to obtain the results and could therefore be compared with each other. Conclusions on the usefulness of floorings and measuring methods could be obtained.
