A monitoring and controlling system for the cylindrical grinding process is introduced with experimental verification. The system uses two different types of sensor, the acoustic emission (AE) and the power sensor, so that most of the problems in the grinding process can be detected and furthermore, the grinding cycle can be automatically optimised. The concept of an intelligent grinding database, which is capable of automatically establishing the database by using some practical grinding results, is also introduced.
