Maloclusões e traumatismos dentários em escolares de seis a doze anos de idade: estudo piloto

MALOCCLUSION AND DENTAL TRAUMA IN SCHOLARS FROM 6 TO 12 YEARS OF AgE: PILOT STUDY The objective of this pilot study was to assess the prevalence of malocclusion and dental trauma among 6 to 12 years-old schoolchildren enrolled in public school. A cross-sectional survey was carried out through clinical examination. Information concerning sex, age, type of malocclusion, cause of trauma, type of teeth, lip competence and the molar relationship were recorded. The data were collected by an only gauged examiner (Kappa = 0.80), registered in standardized record, organized with Epi-Info and submitted to the statistical analysis. The malocclusion presence was diagnosed in 84.0% of the children, not having differences among the genders (p>0.05). The accentuated overjet (50.0%) it was the type of more frequent malocclusion and the relationship molar more observed it was the Class I (54.0%). The prevalence of dental injuries was 32.0%, being more prevalent in the 12 year-old age group. The major reasons for the injuries were falls (50.0%) and in relation to the trauma types the enamel fracture was the most frequent and the central superior incisors the more reached by the trauma. A positive association was verified between the trauma presence and the inadequate lip coverage (p 0.05).
