TRANSIT PRIORITIES AND DEVELOPMENT OF A PASSIVE BUS DETECTION SYSTEM IN EDMONTON

This paper describes the need which led to the development of a cost-effective passive bus detection system in Edmonton (Alberta, Canada). The system utilises "of-the-shelf" equipment and, through the use of a simple algorithm, its discrimination reliability between local diesel buses or trolly-buses and other vehicles approaches 100 per cent. Software is based on identification of basic features of vehicle 'signatures' as produced by a standard loop-detector. The development objectives and principles, as well as the initial experience, are discussed.(a) (TRRL)
