Publication and Prestige Mobility of University Departments in Three Scientific Disciplines.

The relationship between prestige, prestige mobility, and publication in major journals was examined for leading graduate institutions in the disciplines of chemistry, sociology, and political science. There were differences, as expected, across disciplines in the relationship between publication and prestige and prestige mobility. Publication is more important in disciplines with a well-developed scientific paradigm. No relationship was found between the publication of the prestige ratings and subsequent research publication outcomes when previous publication was taken into account.
