In this paper, the authors look at the considerations involved in the thermal performance of a subway system. Specifically, they examine subway ventilation systems, taking into account the environmental impacts of their construction, maintenance and operation. The overall tunnel system design must take into consideration factors such as station depth, layout, track grade and vertical alignment, and train speeds. The authors also relate how certain design steps can be taken to influence tunnel and station conditions, such as sustainable cooling systems, efficient air flow extraction systems, and tunnel ventilation jet fans. In general, the capacity of a tunnel's ventilation system is established by fire emergency mode requirements. By carefully designing the ventilation system and other system-wide parameters, the need for mechanical ventilation to control temperatures and provide an outside air supply for patrons can be reduced. A sustainable approach to the design of subway ventilation systems can reduce environmental impacts, and capital and operating costs.
