Transmission of IP Datagrams over Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) Networks

Local-area networks based on the ATM standard [1] are now commercially available, and wide-area ATM services should follow in the near future. In this memo, we describe how to use an ATM-based network as an IP subnet. To operate the Internet protocol suite over an ATM network, we specify a method of encapsulating IP datagrams [8] and a method of resolving IP host addresses into ATM host addresses using ARP [7]. Our approach uses existing standards, specifically IEEE 802.6 [5], to provide a complete IP-over-ATM solution without reinventing the wheel.
