This paper introduces a hybrid-inverter and a hybrid-converter for an electric railway power supply. Their characteristics, ratings, circuit configurations and control methods are described. The hybrid-inverter is an IGBT-based voltage source type converter developed for a regenerative inverter of the electric railway. The hybrid-converter is a combined system which consists of a diode rectifier and the hybrid-inverter. The Hybrid-Inverter and the Hybrid-Converter are controlled by fixed-pattern pulse with phase shift control method. This method offers smaller loss in the converter while keeping low harmonics. The first hybrid-converters were manufactured and tested. This paper also describes the results of the factory tests and the control block diagram.
