A numerical study of the operational shock response in a hard disk drive using the discrete stiffness method

The flying stability of hard disk drives (HDDs) during operational shock has become increasingly more important as the flying height of the head/disk interface has been reduced to the sub-10 nm flying height regime. In this paper, the dynamic response of a femto slider due to operational shock is investigated. The air bearing is modeled with six linear springs using the “discrete stiffness method”.
