BEAT THE JAM: TRAFFIC SERVICES FOR SHELL MOBILE HONG KONG

This paper describes publicly, for the first time, the recently introduced Shell Mobile traffic service in Hong Kong SAR. The service is one of the first traffic services in the world that successfully combines location with a range of comprehensive real time traffic services covering the whole of Hong Kong SAR and delivered through SMS as well as call centre. The paper details the co-operation of the customer, Shell Mobile with its partners, in putting together a suite of motorist service within a very challenging time frame. Details of the design of the services are described as are the various services offered. A realistic traffic service involves the layering of information. The key layers include mapping data, historical traffic information, real time traffic incidents and simple to use interface/ access options.
