Electrodynamic lifting and the equatorial F region of the ionosphere

The February 1, 1964, issue of this Journal contains three papers on the equatorial anomaly of the ionospheric F region: those by Somayajula [1964], Mariani [1964], and Goldberg et al [1964]. In the opening sentence of an interesting paper, Somayajula implies that the anomaly was discovered in 1960, but this is later corrected. The other two papers consistently imply that the topic is very new.
