This paper considers various aspects of engineering training for highway organisations. It views training as an important requirement for fulfilment of at least the following objectives of highway organisations: (1) preserving the capital investment of the road network; (2) providing a uniform and reasonable level of service, with respect to safety, comfort, and structural integrity; (3) ensuring the economic use of available resources; (4) ensuring correct methodology and workmanship. The paper describes: (1) basic entry requirements for engineers and technicians; (2) educational training establishments for basic entry; (3) the requirements and types of continuing education; (4) skills required for road workers; (5) the role of professional institutions; (6) UK training potential for overseas highway organisations; (7) methodology for training requirements for a highway organisation. Details are given of: (1) job descriptions of road engineering teams; (2) transport research centres in the UK; (3) postgraduate training courses in the UK; (4) examples of overseas training courses on road transport engineering.
