Wavelength multiplexing for information transmission

Abstract Optical information depends normally on one or two dimensions. A parallel transmission through a zero-dimentional fiber therefore needs a suitable coding. For an achromatric grey level object this can be achieved by the use of wavelength multiplexing. The information of each position in the original object is carried by a different wavelength. Simple dispersive elements perform the encoding and decoding process. Application examples are shown for the transmission of bar codes and paper tape data.
