Study on the Injuries of Bicyclists in H Area

To provide guide to bicyclist injuries prevention and make some intervention,this study explored the morbidity and mortality of bicyclist injuries in H Area,China. Traffic accident statistic data between 1994 and 1998 from H Area Police Bureau and related H Area demographic data were analyzed. Bicyclist injuries were at the top among all injuries from different traffic tools. The highest death rate was up to 2 582/100 000 population,about over eight times higher than that in United States. At least 61 5% of the deceased were due to head injuries,the majority(about 74 6%) of them resulted from head collision with concrete or asphalt road. None of patients wore helmet when injured,and helmet usage among the bicyclist population usually was not practised. [Conclusion] Bicycle related head injury is an important public health issue in H Area,China. The bicycle injury surveillance system must be immediately established. Then the prevention and control program should focus on certain strategies such as enforced using of helmet,injury education,and improving road environment.
