Abstract Some considerations on the assessment of structural reliability are presented. It is pointed out that the probabilities of failure of structures which can be calculated or estimated have no real quantitative significance: they are rather conventional, comparative values, but they can play a very important role in making possible rational comparisons between alternative designs.
