Special Issue Imaging Processing-Algorithm and System. 3-D Object Reconstruction Method by Bezier Patches Using a Subdivision Scheme.

A method of 3-D object reconstruction using Bezier patches with a subdivision scheme for recursive refinement of curved surface is described. The subdivision scheme is based first on using Bezier curves to approximate the boundaries of a surface patch, then on using Bezier patches to recursively approximate the curved surface. The advantage is that this method avoids the problem of ensuring the continuity of Bezier patches at the patch boundaries. A volume-approximation error metric is used to measure closeness of fit. The results of applying this method to shape 3-D object data from a slit-ray projection range system are presented. The advantage over the approximation method, which uses only planary patches, is demonstrated.
