Security requirements for network management data

This paper examines the requirements for protecting data needed to monitor, coordinate, and control network resources and their usage. The paper lists the functions of network management, outlines the security concerns, and defines the types of security services that are candidates to protect network management functions and data. It analyzes the flows of management data and identifies the protection required for each data category. A main conclusion is that security for management data will become critical as public and private institutions move from the safety of private, dedicated networks to the open environment of public, shared networks like the Internet.
