INTERMODAL FREIGHT TRANSPORTATION

The paper is a statement by the moderator of a panel on intermediate freight transport. "Intermodality" means movement of freight via two or more dissimilar means or modes of transportation. It is a simple procedure predating recorded history, but in its current manifestations, intermodality is a sophisticated and versatile technique indispensable to modern society. Today, very few shipments of goods or documents do not move intermodally. Subjects covered include intermodal movement of bulk commodities, airfreight forwarders, shipper's agents, and ocean carriers.
