Ch. 22. Repeatability, reproducibility and interlaboratory studies

Publisher Summary This chapter summarizes various concepts and approaches to the estimation of reproducibility, repeatability, and other related variabilities. The approach considered in the chapter is statistical in nature and emphasis is on its practical applicability. As a result, all the approaches discussed in the chapter are model based. The chapter presents some basic definitions and concepts as defined in various industrial standards documents and related articles. Some of the most useful and commonly adopted models have been considered in the chapter. There are a variety of other issues that one encounters in a repeatability and reproducibility study. Even though most models fall under the general umbrella of experimental designs, the statistical analysis may go far beyond. It is required to examine data graphically or apply formal statistical tests to identify any discrepancies and/or to validate the models. Detection of outliers and possible corrective actions are important before any statements about reproducibility and repeatability can be made.
