METEOROLOGICAL ESTIMATION OF EXTREME PRECIPITATION FOR SPILLWAY DESIGN FLOODS

The spillways of most large dams built in the United States in the last 25 years are designed to carry the flood resulting from probable maximum precipitation. This paper reviews the historical reasons for this partic ular approach to design in the United States, summarizes the procedures that have evolved for estimating probable maximum precipitation, and examines trends.
