Electronic Discussions in an Issues Course

Abstract Using case-based discussion pedagogy can be an effective method for helping preservice and inservice teachers reflect on complex educational issues. However, these discussions frequently raise questions that cannot be addressed during the standard class period. Internet-based newsgroups were used in this course, Teaching Diverse Students in Inclusive Settings, to expand the boundaries of time and place, enabling students to engage in meaningful discussions outside of the classroom. We evaluated our use of newsgroups relative to whether it supported building a community of learners, the degree to which it helped us create a forum for undominated dialogue, and the quality of discussion that occurred. Our discussion highlights several positive outcomes associated with using Internet-based discussion groups to build on class discussions and also addresses the problems and pitfalls we encountered.
