Voltage stability assessment using modal analysis of power systems including flexible AC transmission system (FACTS)

The rapid development of power electronics technology provides exciting opportunities to develop new power system equipment for better utilization of existing systems. During the last decade, a number of control devices under the term flexible AC transmission systems (FACTS) technology have been proposed and implemented. This paper describes a voltage stability comparison study between two FACTS devices on static behavior of a transmission system: a static VAr compensator (SVC) and thyristor switched series capacitor (TSSC). This study has been performed using modal analysis technique. The impact of these devices on voltage stability has been investigated using the 30-bus New-England system.
