ALG: a model for generating alternative layout graphs under architectural constraints

Abstract This paper describes a computer model which deals with the first two stages of architectural design: the programmatic and the topological ones. The suggested ALG model makes use of graph theory to generate possible alternative layout graphs, under given programmatic requirements and constraints. The results represent the designer's view of the functional performance of a design, as well as ideas about the organization of the activities into the complete layout. The application of the model is demonstrated in a case study, planning a mother and child care station, consisting of nine activities.
