The early days of engineering geology in the UK – a personal view by Peter Fookes F.R. Eng.

In my opinion, the development of engineering geology was a team effort, a general evolution with contributions from all those involved in ‘geology for engineers’ during the decades after World War II, notably the 1950s to the 1970s, with increasing use of geologists by the civil engineering profession. This article illustrates my memories of this evolution through this formative period using for each decade the same six ‘indicators’: notable engineering; training and courses; contractors and contractors’ laboratories; consultants; societies, associations and meetings; journals and publications.
