Innovative Passive/Hybrid Solar Design Concepts Employed in the U.S.

A survey of leading U.S. solar designers and a review of recent literature conducted for the International Energy Agency’s Passive Solar Task revealed that designers are experimenting with a variety of new techniques and designs such as creative thermal mass, active collection with passive discharge, novel distribution and control devices, and unconventional building configurations. From the whole building point of view, designers are giving careful attention to the successful integration of all aspects of the energy system. However, a recent survey conducted by the National Association of Homebuilders indicated that conventional builders tend to view passive/hybrid design as separate marketable features. More effective technology transfer between designers and builders; better performance data on solar low energy features and residences; and simplified design tools are needed to help passive/hybrid solar low energy homes enter the mass housing market.
