Geometrical and Topological Characterization of Cork Cells by Digital Image Analysis

In this paper a methodology for processing automatically the digital images of plane sections of cork is presented. The purpose is twofold: firstly to segment the cells and secondly to characterize them geometrically and topologically. The algorithms developed are based on image analysis methods: two different approaches are presented, one based on mathematical morphology and the other based on pretopology notions. Tests were done using images taken from the tangential section of cork.
