The Design of Automatic Gain Control Amplifier with Fast Response

This paper presents a kind of integrated automatic gain control (AGC) amplifier with fast response. The AGC amplifier with large dynamic range is designed by using TSMC 0.18 µm CMOS process. In order to achieve fast response to the signal, the AGC amplifier uses dual control of peak detection and PWM mode, and changes the gain of the variable gain amplifier (VGA) dynamically according to the strength of the input signal. Measurement results demonstrate that this AGC amplifier achieves a gain range of -76.2 dB ~ 22 dB, and response time is 1.6 µs.
