Time-Dependent Deformation Behavior of Clays

A constitutive model for the time-dependent behavior of cohesive soil has been developed by unifying existing phenomenological models for the behavior of cohesive soils under specific boundary conditions. It is composed of separate, but not independent, volumetric and deviatoric components. Each model component is assumed to consist of time-independent and time-dependent contributions. The model has been shown to work well for the prediction of deformation and time-independent pore pressures in laboratory tests using remolded San Francisco bay mud. Although prediction of time-dependent pore pressure development was poor, the otherwise good results warrant further study and application of the approach.
