Collaborative Optimization Based Design Process for Process Engineering

Traditionally, the paper mills have been designed using mostly engineering experiences and rules of thumbs. The main target of the design has been the structure of the plant, whereas finding the optimal operation of the plant has been left for the operators. Bi-level multi-objective optimization (BLMOO) offers a method for optimizing both the structure and the operation during the design phase. In order to use BLMOO in design projects, the business process has to be re-engineered. This research defines a process for applying BLMOO in process design in multi-organizational projects. The process is then evaluated by interviewing experts.
