Frame Rate Up-Conversion Algorithm Based on Unidirectional-bidirectional-combined Motion Estimation

Motion estimation is one of the most decisive procedures of motion compensated frame rate up-conversion(FRUC) algorithm. Its accuracy could directly affect the quality of interpolated frames. In this paper,an unidirectional-bidirectional-combined motion estimation algorithm is presented. The accuracy of motion estimation could be improved by introducing unidirectional motion estimation to the traditional bidirectional motion estimation. In addition, median filter is applied in this paper to smooth the motion vector field and overlapped block based motion compensation(OBMC) is applied to generate new frames. The test results indicate that the proposed motion estimation method could enhance the quality of interpolated frames both objectively and subjectively.
