Listening to Capoeira: Phenomenology, Embodiment, and the Materiality of Music

L'A. examine comment, chez les praticiens de la capoeira - une forme artistique afro-bresilienne melant des elements de danse et d'arts martiaux -, se realise un apprentissage de l'ecoute/de l'audition. A travers une exploration phenomenologique de l'audition, il demontre que la culture faconne l'ecoute, mais egalement que la perception sensible est un phenomene intrinsequement social et culturel. Il soutient que les influences sociales et culturelles jouent un role important non seulement dans l'interpretation linguistique et symbolique de la musique, mais particulierement dans son apprehension sensible. A la question rituelle : Comment sonne la musique ? ont peut alors substituer l'interrogation formulee par C. Geertz : Qu'est-ce que les praticiens-musiciens percoivent avec - ou au moyen de ou a travers ? Selon l'A., les praticiens percoivent la musique non seulement a travers un ensemble de categories cognitives et d'associations symboliques, mais avec un corps entraine et reactif, a travers des habitudes copiees des autres et renforcees socialement, et au moyen de competences musicales personnelles, acquises par soi-meme et engagees de facon active dans l'ecoute.
