AWT energy needs a prime concern. [Water Factory 21, Orange County, Calif]

Water Factory 21, Orange County, California, is an advanced design waste water reclamation facility capable of recycling up to 15 mgd. Efficient fuel use at the installation is described. The reclaimed waste water is blended with an equal portion of high quality ground water extracted from deep-water bearing strata. The blended water is then injected into shallow aquifers that are subject to seawater intrusion. The injected water forms a hydraulic barrier preventing sea-water intrusion and protects existing water supplies as well as providing replenishment water for domestic, agricultural, and industrial reuse. Both primary and secondary energy requirements for the advanced waste treatment (AWT) plant were investigated during this study. Primary energy is defined as on-site, direct requirements for the treatment processes. Secondary energy is defined as off-site requirements for the production of consumable materials used in the treatment process. (MCW)
