Hemolysis in different series of the Starr-Edwards aortic valve prosthesis.

Eighty-three patients bearing aortic valve prostheses have been evaluated for evidence and degree of hemolysis. The incidence of hemolytic anemia in the 2300 series of valves was high, occurring in 10 of 24 patients. The 2310 and 2320 series had a lower incidence of anemia with five patients of 33 being affected. The 1000 and 1200 models showed an absence of significant hemolysis. The modified 2320 valve, while showing lower averages for LDH activity and frequency of anemia, still does not approach the original noncloth covered models in freedom from this condition.
