Biochemical Studies on Griseofulvin‐Induced Protoporphyria

Griseofulvin (GF), an antifungal drug that has been distributed worldwide, has been used mainly in the treatment of dermatophytoses. Since the discovery of GF-induced protoporphyria in 1963, G F has also been utilized in investigations of porphyric photosensitivity, in therapeutic treatments for human erythropoietic protoporphyria, and in studies of synergistic effects on chemically induced porhyrinopathies. In this paper, the history of studies on GF-induced protoporphyria is reviewed, and the biochemistry of and the direction of future studies on this phenomenon are discussed.
