Harder and Smarter

This paper discusses how FACTS (flexible AC transmission system) and WAMS (wide area monitoring systems) technologies can help the UK to meet the challenge of connecting renewable generation. This is achieved by constructing the necessary grid reinforcements while getting more out of its current transmission network. However, the growth in renewable poses new challenges for the UK transmission network, particularly in Scotland. Transmission system reinforcements, which are necessary to carry the very large amounts of additional power generated by wind and marine from the more remote parts of the UK, may potentially be delayed by lengthy public enquiries. FACTS and WAMS technology could allow a flexible upgrade path for the existing transmission network, enabling it to work harder and smarter, while allowing time for the construction of necessary transmission reinforcement and help make the achievement of the UK Government 2010 Renewable Energy Targets more likely.
