Printed planar patch antennas based on metamaterial

The article presents implementation of two antennas based on metamaterial (MTM) technology, standard printed planar patch manufacturing techniques and applying the proper capacitive and inductive components such as b-shaped gap capacitances and spiral inductors. The first antenna is constructed of four b-shaped unit cells with small dimension, ultra wideband performance and good radiation patterns. By increasing the number of unit cells, the effective aperture of the structure is increased that leads to increasing the performance parameters. Hence, the second antenna is designed by six unit cells, which has exhibited better performance parameters in comparison to the first antenna, but also with a slightly larger size.
