Effects of constitutive parameters on strain localization in sands

This paper presents an analysis of the effects of constitutive parameters on bifurcation and shear band formation in granular soils. Strain localization is analyzed in terms of Vermeer's compliance approach, which is re-derived and generalized in this paper. The paper also shows that Vermeer's compliance approach is equivalent to other more complex localization criteria. A simple elastoplastic constitutive model for biaxial loading condition is introduced, which adequately captures the monotonic response of granular soils particularly the variation of dilatancy and mobilized friction with shear deformation. Using the constitutive model, the strain localization criterion is expressed in terms of constitutive parameters. Both the model and the strain localization criterion are verified against the experimental data. The model and the localization criterion are then applied in a parametric study to determine the sensitivity of strain localization in granular soils to constitutive parameters.
