A Study of Mental Model and Core Competencies of Taiwan 3D Animation Professionals

The purpose of this study is to identify the core competencies of Taiwan 3D animation professionals. In the 21 st century, due to the convergence of art aesthetics and digital technology, Taiwan takes efforts on the visual design of the era. The “original” and “aesthetic” are the essence of digital design. Most significantly, computer animation is made upon the index. To meet the human requirements of industries, animated film is nurturing creative talent of Taiwan animation professionals. Since 2001, Taiwan’s colleges and universities have been authorized the animation-related departments by the Ministry of Education. So far, the number of those departments is beyond 20 departments at national wide level.. However, animation teaching objectives should be met with employment needs of the animation business. To enhance those students’ professional capabilities, it can support the growth of animation industry too. Considering of above, to establish the common mental map of 3D computer animation professionals and its core competencies will help the academic animation education Link the needs of the industry. This study via interviews with 3D animation experts of Taiwan is to sketch the mental map of self-learning. Then, this study derives the 3D animation talent’s core competencies. The research methods in this study include qualitative interviews, coding and development categories, sketch mental map and summarization of its core competencies. The results show that professional competence of computer animation talents includes planning and design capabilities, computer technical skills, and job occupation development abilities. Finally, the recommendation for 3D animation departments and business companies are also provided.
