Connecting cities - local transport, national connectivity, and economic growth

This report summarises the result of seminars held in Newcastle upon Tyne, Birmingham, Liverpool, Bristol and Reading in the UK and sets out a casefor greater investment in local transport on the basis of the major economic returns such investment would produce. It is considered that more needs to be done to ensure that urban transport systems can cope with demand. It is suggested that the regional cities need appropriate powers and private investment to deliver transport improvements. The potential for targeted forms of road user charging and smarter travel planning are discussed.
