ENERGY ASSESSMENT OF INSTITUTIONAL BUILDINGS

The degree to which new non-residential buildings are designed to have a minimum impact on the environment varies considerably although public and institutional buildings are more likely to comply as a result of perceived community obligations. Environmental performance criteria and benchmark levels are not well defined and information is required to assist designers and facility managers in making informed decisions. Some preliminary work is presented which analyses the life cycle energy consumption of a university campus as an initial step in forming environmental performance criteria.
