THE ROAD SAFETY MONITOR 2002: RISKY DRIVING

This report presents the results of a Canadian annual highway safety survey on risky driving. The survey was performed by the Traffic Injury Research Foundation. The results cover the year 2002. Canadians still consider aggressive driving and red light running to be problematic. They are also concerned about cell phone use while driving, though they do not worry about other driver distractions. Cell phone use increased in 2002 in British Columbia and Atlantic Canada to a level comparable to that of the rest of Canada. The Canadian people are in favor of the use of greater enforcement to help control risky drivers. They (60% of those surveyed) support the use of red light cameras. Sixty-eight % of Canadian drivers support banning the use of hand-held phones while driving. Sixty-two % of Canadian drivers support banning the use of all cell phones by drivers.
