Computer Simulation of Solidification

The current state-of-the-art of computer simulation of solidification has been reviewed. Brief descriptions are given for methods of handling the latent heat of fusion and analog, finite element, finite difference, and pseudo-steady state technique used to stimulate solidification are defined. Methods of reducing manpower requirements are discussed as well as general purpose heat transfer codes currently available. The paper concludes with several examples of solidification simulation including die casting, welding, and die design applications.
